International Geophysical Year, 1957; U.S. mail system introduces zip codes, 1963; Sony introduces the Walkman, 1979

The International Geophysical Year marked the end of a period of the Cold War when there was little exchange between East and West. Eisenhower announced that the U.S. would launch satellites during this year. The U.S.S.R. launched Sputnik 1 as the first earth-circling satellite a few months later. Following Sputnik 2, the U.S. sent the third satellite, Explorer 1, in February 1958.
